100% Solid Timber

Most furniture sold in Australia as “wood” is a thin printed skin over particleboard. Ours is not. Every piece in the Oak & Walnut range is cut from solid boards — the same timber all the way through, edge to edge and face to face.

What we use

American oak. FAS-graded, the highest commercial grade there is: at least 83% of every board must be clear of defects. Pale, straight-grained, and it takes an oil finish beautifully.

American black walnut. The most prized cabinet timber in the world. Deep chocolate heartwood with a fine, even grain that lightens slightly and settles over the first few years in your home.

Ash. Bright, open-grained and exceptionally tough — the timber traditionally used for tool handles and sporting goods, because it takes impact without splitting.

Cherry. Warm and reddish when new, deepening to a rich amber with light exposure. No two cherry pieces age the same way.

How it is made

Boards are kiln-dried to 8–12% moisture content before a single cut is made — the range that keeps timber stable through an Australian summer and a Melbourne winter alike. Panels are edge-glued rather than veneered. Drawers run on solid timber or full-extension steel runners. Frames are mortise-and-tenon or dowelled, not stapled.

Surfaces are finished by hand with a low-VOC penetrating oil that soaks into the grain instead of sitting on top of it. Scratches can be sanded and re-oiled at home — something no lacquered veneer will ever allow.

What that means for you

Solid timber can be repaired, re-sanded and re-finished indefinitely. It gains character rather than losing it. It holds a screw. It survives being moved. And it is the reason we are comfortable putting a 10-year structural warranty behind every piece.
